Is Shockwave Therapy for you?

Shockwave therapy helps treat a range of conditions, especially where previous conservative management has failed to resolve the issue. Conditions treated by shockwave therapy include:

What is Shockwave Therapy & is It Effective?

Shockwave Therapy, also known as Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT), is a safe, non-invasive therapy that uses high pressured acoustic shockwaves. The waves move through the skin to break down targeted tissue and stimulate tissue repair, in turn activating our natural healing mechanisms.

Shockwave therapy is a proven, research-based approach that can be highly effective in treating a range of chronic musculoskeletal conditions.

What Does a Shockwave Therapy Treatment Involve?

Shockwave therapy is a safe and non-invasive, involving the application of a contact gel to the area and a handheld probe to your skin. The probe delivers controlled acoustic waves for approximately 5-10 minutes for each injured area.

During the treatment, you might feel a bit of discomfort, but it’s usually only mild. After the treatment, many patients feel no more pain or greatly reduced pain.

A shockwave therapy course typically entails weekly treatments for between 3 and 6 weeks. People experiencing chronic conditions, or problems that cause significant pain, may require a longer course of treatment.

How Shockwave Therapy Relieves Pain

Shockwave Therapy works by stimulating healing and reducing inflammation. The therapy causes a release of substance P from the terminal vesicles of nerves, which saturates pain receptors and causes an overload and blocking effect, resulting in an immediate decrease in pain. Essentially, the nerves that cause pain are “paralysed,” allowing patients to perform tasks that usually cause pain without feeling it. The therapy stimulates pain relief and soft tissue repair by delivering pulses to the tissue, creating microtrauma at the site, which results in an altered biological response. This change in blood flow accelerates tissue repair and promotes healing.
