What Is Flat Feet?

Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, occur when the arches of your feet collapse, causing the entire sole to touch the ground. This condition can lead to pain, swelling, and difficulty standing or walking for long periods. Excessive pronation, which often accompanies flat feet, can disrupt the foot’s natural shock absorption process and lead to various issues such as heel pain, shin pain, and ankle problems. Imagine your feet as the foundation of a building; when the foundation isn’t strong, the entire structure can suffer. Similarly, flat feet can affect your knees, hips, and back, leading to misalignment and discomfort throughout your body.

Causes of Flat Feet

  • Injuries: Trauma to the foot or ankle, such as fractures or sprains, can weaken the arches.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Prolonged standing, overuse, diabetes, and obesity can contribute to flat feet.
  • Unsupportive or worn-out footwear: Like worn-out suspension on a car, over time, footwear can lose its structural integrity and fail to provide adequate support.
  • Medical Conditions: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes can also lead to flat feet.
  • Genetics: If flat feet run in your family, you can inherit the condition.
  • Age: As we age, our muscles, tendons, and ligaments can weaken, increasing the risk of flat feet
  • Developmental Factors: Children are often born with flat feet and develop arches as they grow. In some cases, the arches never develop.
